The prosecutor says Porter received several IOU markers from the Hard Rock in June.

Porter played 13 seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals before retiring in July.

His arrest was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Bradford connected with Lance Kendricks on an 80-yard scoring pass on the first play of the third quarter. The Rams' persistent defense did its part, too, intercepting Josh Freeman four times, turning three of the turnovers into TDs, including Jenkins' pick and 41-yard return early in the first half.

Steven Jackson rushed for 81 yards and one TD, moving within 10 yards of reaching 1,000 for the eighth consecutive season.

"We all realize what's at stake, obviously," Bradford said. "We found the playoffs aren't in the picture still, but if we go up and beat Seattle, we'd be undefeated in our division and finish with a winning record, which are two things we'd really like to accomplish next week."

Tampa Bay (6-9) turned the ball five times and was stopped on downs twice inside the Rams 10 en route to its fifth straight loss. The Bucs also had five turnovers the previous week in a 41-0 loss at New Orleans.

Bradford completed 13 of 27 passes for 196 yards, one interception and no sacks - ending a stretch in which the St. Louis quarterback was sacked in a league-high 30 consecutive games.

Kendricks finished with four receptions for 119 yards, while Jackson closed in on extending the NFL's longest current streak of 1,000-yard seasons rushing on 19 carries.

"We were hoping that we could knock it out and get it out of the way, but they're a very tough defense - No. 1 against the run - so we're very pleased with how we were able to move the ball on the ground," Jackson said.

Tampa Bay outgained the Rams 429 yards to 285, with Freeman going 30 of 54 for 372 yards and one TD. But the Bucs simply were unable the fourth-year pro being intercepted four times for the second straight week.

                             Stephen Hill placed on New York Jets' IR

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets have placed rookie wide receiver Stephen Hill on injured reserve, ending his season because of a knee injury.

Hill, the Jets' second-round pick in April out of Georgia Tech, sprained the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee in the team's game at Jacksonville on Dec. 9. He did not travel with the Jets for their game at Tennessee Monday night.

Dimitri Patterson awarded to Miami Dolphins off waivers

DAVIE, Fla. -- Defensive back Dimitri Patterson has been awarded to the Miami Dolphins one day after being waived by the Cleveland Browns.

The Dolphins also placed backup tight end Charles Clay on injured reserve Tuesday with a right knee injury. Patterson reinforces the secondary with the questionable status of cornerback Nolan Carroll, who hurt his left knee in Sunday's win over Jacksonville.

Patterson, who signed a $16 million, three-year contract last offseason, has appeared in seven games this season with four starts. He missed seven games after tearing a ligament in his left ankle, but has played the past two weeks.

"He kicked fluidly, he made the field goals in pregame, made all of his field goals last week in practice, and looked good doing it," Slocum said. "I think (the struggling) indicates that he’s fighting to do it right."

Green Bay's faith here is more about philosophy than player. They drafted and developed Crosby, and the team believes investment requires patience. ThePackers are taking a risk by sticking to Crosby, but there's at least a method to their madness.

                                    Adrian Peterson has big day in Minnesota Vikings' win over St. Louis Rams

ST. LOUIS -- Adrian Peterson peeked up at the video board at the end of his 82-yard touchdown run and saw St. Louis Rams players trailing far behind him.

And with each fancy high-step to cap it off, the Minnesota Vikings running back moved closer to the NFL rushing record.

Peterson piled up a season-best 212 yards on 24 carries in a 36-22 victory Sunday that wasn't as close as the score indicated. He has a career-best 1,812 yards rushing, leaving him 294 shy of breaking the NFL's single-season mark of 2,105 set by Eric Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams in 1984.

"Yeah, yeah, I was able to see myself," Peterson said. "I just told myself to stay relaxed and 'You don't have to put on too much juice, but make sure you get there.'"

He remained hot on the trail of Dickerson's record. Peterson, less than a year removed from a serious knee injury, has two games left -- at Houston and home against Green Bay -- to top it.

"Yeah, it's been in my sights," Peterson said. "I'm not focusing on it. It's in the back of my head that, hey I definitely want to accomplish that.

"I look at today's game and I could have had 300."

Slight consolation for the Rams: Without the two long-gainers, Peterson had 78 yards on 22 carries.

"He's very elusive, very elusive," tackle Michael Brockers said. "You've got to get all tacklers to the ball. On some of the big runs, we didn't do that very well."

On Peterson's long touchdown run in the second quarter, he was able to turn what appeared would be a short gain into a big score.

"He continues to amaze you with some of his runs," coach Leslie Frazier said. "It looks like there was nothing there and the next thing you know he's out the door."

The Vikings (8-6) scored 10 of their 23 points in the second quarter off turnovers by Sam Bradford, including a 29-yard interception return by defensive end Everson Griffen, who had dropped into coverage. The Rams quarterback watched in disbelief from his knees.

"Yeah, that's one of those things I've got to be able to see," Bradford said. "He's right there. You can't throw one right to him like that."

They were up by 26 before Bradford, whose botched center snap also cost the Rams (6-7-1) a field goal in the second quarter, threw touchdown passes to Danny Amendola andLance Kendricks in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings remained in the playoff picture while seriously damaging the Rams' postseason hopes. St. Louis had won three in a row to become a dark horse candidate for the playoffs.

Steven Jackson became the 15th player to rush for 10,000 yards for the Rams. He had 73 yards on just eight carries and has 909 yards on the year, keeping him in range of an eighth straight 1,000-yard season.

A moment of silence was observed for victims of the Connecticut elementary school shooting before the national anthem, with dozens of children wearing uniform jerseys holding hands with players in a circle extending from the 30-yard lines and centered on the Rams' logo at midfield.

In a tribute to the 26 victims, each team sent the players wearing the No. 26 jersey --Rams running back Daryl Richardson and Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield -- and they held hands with coaches Jeff Fisher and Frazier to form a smaller interior circle.

"What went through my mind? I have a son that's in kindergarten," Jackson said. "You drop your kid off at school and he or she wants to go there and learn and better themselves, and to then go to the school and find that your child will no longer be with you, I couldn't imagine that thing."

Peterson topped his previous single-season best of 1,760 yards in 2007 on a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter. On both long runs, Peterson made something out of nothing with nimble cutbacks to daylight.

Christian Ponder had a turnover-free game and ran for the game's first score for theVikings, who had been just 1-5 on the road with the other victory at Detroit in September. Rookie kicker Blair Walsh was perfect on five field-goal attempts, three of them from 50 yards and beyond.

The Rams stopped Peterson, held to minus-3 yards on five carries, but not Ponder on theVikings' opening drive. Benefiting from a short field at the St. Louis 45, the quarterback was 3 for 3 for 38 yards plus a 5-yard scramble that put them up 7-0.

Rookie Brian Quick won a jump ball with A.J. Jefferson in the end zone on a 4-yard reception, landing just inbounds to tie it early in the second quarter.

Then, the Vikings took over.

Peterson had eight carries for 8 yards before breaking his 82-yard score on the next play.

"It's all about famine, famine, feast," Peterson said. "We knew it was going to be tough early and our offensive line was dialed into it. We just kept pounding them."

Walsh's 50-yard field goal made the Rams pay for Bradford's botched snap and Griffen's first career interception and return gave Minnesota 17 points in a span of just 3:56.

"He threw it right to me," Griffen said. "It was a dream come true. I want to say 'Thank you, Sam Bradford.'"

Peterson entered the day with more rushing yards than 23 teams, including the Rams, and accounted for more than two thirds of the Vikings' 322 yards. Ponder was a facilitator, completing 17 of 24 passes for 131 yards.

                  Tom Heckert: 'Important' I retain roster control

"Uh, you know what? Yeah, I do. There's a lot of things. ... I'm sure we're going to sit down and talk about after the season," he said. "But right now, of course, I really enjoy the city and I really enjoy this team and so that would be the ideal situation."

New York Giants running back David Wilson was expected to contribute out of the gate this season, but that didn't happen.

The rookie out of Virginia Tech slipped into coach Tom Coughlin's doghouse early because he couldn't hold onto the football. His costly fumble in a season-opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys went viral after Wilson appeared to shed tears on the sideline.

We can't fault the man for showing a little emotion, but Coughlin was convinced Wilson wasn't ready for prime-time. The youngster vanished from the Giants backfield, carrying the ball only eight times through the first five weeks of the season.

With Ahmad Bradshaw hurting in Sunday's 52-27 win over the Saints, Coughlin had no choice but to give Wilson a full opportunity. This time around, the rookie didn't disappoint, finishing the game with a franchise-record 327 all-purpose yards. Let's take a look at what went down.

Running around the Saints

Last year's postseason run by the Giants was ignited by the emergence of Victor Cruz. It's a frightening proposition for the NFC to watch as Big Blue unearths another dangerous playmaker in December.

The Giants are known for bringing their runners along slowly. The knock on Wilson early was ball security and pass protection. Young backs often struggle in their blocking assignments. We saw the same in Denver from the fleet-footed Ronnie Hillman, who saw his snaps limited because he couldn't do his job protecting the quarterback.

It's no coincidence we're talking about a pair of Mannings here.

Where Wilson excels is in hitting the hole. His decision-making could have been better on a handful of carries against the Saints, but not on this 52-yard dart around left end. Faster than light.

Running through the Saints

Speed backs often struggle in the NFL.

Wilson showed bursts of power against the Saints, and had nice moments in pass protection, but he'll never be a power back. Wilson's blazing moves are his greatest gift.

Wilson does show an ability to pull defenders with him -- exampled by his 6-yard touchdown run against the Saints -- but it's his quickness that leads to plays like this 21-yard rip through the defense. Wilson averaged a sensational 7.7 yards per carry on Sunday.

Watching the tape of this game -- and monitoring the flow of Wilson's 13 carries -- he obviously benefited from a larger workload. Coughlin talked this season about giving Wilson specific plays in specific situations, but the training wheels are off.

Leaving the Saints in the rear-view mirror

Wilson the runner is a work in progress. Wilson the return man is a masterpiece. His tempo-changing 93-yard kick return for the score kept New York afloat early against theSaints. Seconds after New Orleans defensive back Elbert Mack took an Eli Manninginterception 73 yards to the house, Wilson returned the favor.

This wasn't an aberration. Wilson averaged 56.8 yards on four returns in Week 14, and he's currently ranked by Football Outsiders as the top kick return man in football.

Giants defensive end Justin Tuck didn't like the celebratory backflip on the tail-end of this score, but we might see it again.

Wilson has come a long way. Far from of Coughlin's doghouse, he's earned his coach's respect. It's taken months, but the wait is over.

               Rashard Mendenhall suspended by Pittsburgh Steelers

Rashard Mendenhall's difficult 2012 season has hit another speed bump.

The Pittsburgh Steelers suspended the running back one game for conduct detrimental to the team, the Steelers announced Tuesday. Mendenhall will miss Sunday's gameagainst the Dallas Cowboys.

Baron Batch was promoted from the Steelers' practice squad to replace Mendenhall.

NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala reported that Mendenhall did not show up at Heinz Field for last week's loss to the San Diego Chargers after being told he would not dress, according to a team source.

Mendenhall has been inactive for the last two games after fumbling in a 20-14 loss to theCleveland Browns on Nov. 25. He was third on the depth chart behind Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman when the Steelers released its updated chart on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Mendenhall has struggled staying healthy over the last 11 months. He tore the ACL in his right knee in the 2011 regular-season finale and returned on Oct. 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, accounting for 101 yards and a touchdown in a 16-14 victory. Mendenhall strained his right Achilles the following week against the Tennessee Titans and never regained a firm hold on the starting job.

Mendenhall is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season, and this appears to be a clear sign the former first-round pick won't be back with the team in 2012.

It can't be a good feeling for a NFL coach to approach a podium following a 58-0 loss.

This was the fate that faced Ken Whisenhunt on Sunday, who had the unenviable task of explaining how the Arizona Cardinals were beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in such devastating fashion.

"Let me start by saying I apologize to our fans and everybody associated with our organization," Whisenhunt told reporters, via the Cardinals' team site. "That was embarrassing today."

Norv Turner addresses report Chargers will fire him

U-T San Diego's Kevin Acee reported Thursday that San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner will be fired at the end of the season.

Turner has been down this road before -- we heard the same reports about his demise this time last year. This time, Acee reportedChargers president Dean Spanos "essentially decided at least a month ago" that Turner would be fired. Spanos dismissed the report in a team-issued statement, but there doesn't seem to be any escaping the ax this time around for Turner.

Turner was asked about the report Friday as theChargers prepared for this week's game against thePittsburgh Steelers.

"It's part of the deal," he said. "The one thing I always feel good about, I got here at 5:30 in the morning and there were guys in the weight room, there were guys in the training room, there were guys already in meeting rooms watching tape. ... Any of the reports haven't affected them, and that's what I care about. They're getting ready to go and play their best and give themselves a chance to win in Pittsburgh."

Turner said the report isn't affecting his approach to coaching.

"I don't think so," he said, "so, you know, that's what I was trying to refer to. Our staff was here doing cards, preparing for practice when I got here at 5:30 in the morning. It's an outstanding staff, and I think they've done an outstanding job for this football team."

DETROIT -- The Green Bay Packers are winning again, and they aren't too concerned about how they look doing it.

Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes, including a 22-yarder to Randall Cobb with 1:55 left, and the Packers pulled out a 24-20 win over Detroit Lions on Sunday for their fifth straight victory.

The Packers (7-3) moved within a half-game of first-place Chicago in the NFC North after losing three of their first five games. The Bears play at San Francisco on Monday night.

"Early on, we were trying to find the identity we had last year when we had an attitude that no one could stop us coming off our Super Bowl," receiver Donald Driver said. "Now, we got our groove back and we're ready to roll."

The Lions (4-6), are struggling. They have dropped two in a row to make their goal of playing in consecutive postseasons very challenging. They begin a difficult schedule run on Thanksgiving against AFC-South leading Houston.

Lions center Dominic Raiola bristled when asked about the team falling short of expectations.

"That's how we got in trouble earlier in the season," Raiola said.

Matthew Stafford couldn't put the Lions ahead on either of their last two drives in a game he'd like to forget.

Stafford threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. One of the interceptions was returned 72 yards by Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings for a go-ahead score in the third quarter.

"We just buckled," Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy said. "Even that last touchdown late in the game, we had a chance to make a play on it, we just didn't make the play. That's kind of been the theme for us this year, being in position and not finishing."

On Green Bay's next possession, Mason Crosby made a 39-yard field goal with 19 seconds to go after missing two field goals earlier in the game.

Finley had three receptions for 66 yards and a score for the Packers, who were able to strike somewhat of a balance with James Starks running for 74 yards.

Stafford completed just 17 of 39 passes -- missing many receivers badly -- for 266 yards with a 25-yard TD pass to Calvin Johnson that put Detroit ahead 17-14 late in the third quarter. Stafford also lost a fumble near midfield in the second quarter one drive after throwing a pass directly toward rookie cornerback Casey Hayward, who started for the injured Sam Shields.

The Lions also had some drama on the sideline with receivers coach Shawn Jefferson screaming at offensive coordinator Scott Linehan late in the game.

Johnson had five receptions for 143 yards and caught a TD pass from Stafford for the second straight week after they failed to connect for a score in the first eight games of the season.

Mikel Leshoure had 84 yards rushing and a 1-yard TD run that gave Detroit a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Lions settled for field goals after driving inside the Green Bay 10 early and late in the game and those missed opportunities proved to be costly against a team that is building momentum.

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is probably hitting the home stretch of his career in Kansas City with free agency approaching and the Chiefs unlikely to use a franchise tag on him again.

This reminds us of Cleveland Browns general manager Mike Holmgren's denial of Cowboys rumors the other day. Bowe is essentially trying to clean up a story that his own agents very likely started. NFL: Trindon Holliday TD for Denver Broncos a mistake

The NFL has admitted errors in two high-profile controversies from Week 10 action. Let's start with the punt return touchdown by the Denver Broncos' Trindon Holliday.

We noted Sunday after the Broncos' 36-14 victory over the Carolina Panthers that it looked like the playshould have been called a touchback on review because of Holliday's premature celebration. It was never reviewed. The NFL agreed in a released statement:

"Because the video showed that Holliday lost possession of the ball before it broke the plane of the goal line, Boylston should have stopped the game to initiate an instant replay review," the league said in a statement.

"Had that occurred, (referee Alberto) Riveron would have had the indisputable visual evidence necessary to overturn the on-field ruling.

"The result of the play should have been a touchback -- not a touchdown -- with Carolina gaining possession at the 20 yard-line."

That's simple enough. In this day of social media and endlessly available highlights, the NFL has laudably decided to be transparent. The Broncos won in a blowout, which lessens the outrage in Carolina.

The other issue occurred in the49ers-Rams game where more thanone minute of game action was lostwhile the officials brought out the chains to measure a potential first down. The NFL blamed the clock operator, not the officials.

"(Line judge Ron) Marinucci -- who as the line judge is by rule responsible for the timing of the game -- spoke directly to the clock operator from the sideline phone and was told that there was no issue with the game clock.

"He relayed this information to (referee Clete) Blakeman who then announced 'the game clock is correct. Fourth and short.' Blakeman blew his whistle and signaled for the game clock -- still at 12:13 -- to start. The next snap occurred with 12:02 remaining in the second quarter.

"No member of the officiating crew recognized that the clock was incorrectly started by the clock operator during the measurement. Once the next snap occurs, there is no mechanism to adjust the clock. Matters of timing are not reviewable by instant replay.

"The clock operator is employed by the Officiating Department at the league office. The clock procedures will be carefully reviewed this week with all game officials and clock operators to avoid further clock mistakes."

We can't remember a similar clock error in the past, so it's hard to see this as some sort of growing problem. It's interesting to see the clocker operator thrown so publicly under the bus.

We're just happy these mistakes didn't happen when the replacement referees were in place or there may have been riots outside the NFL offices on Monday.

Adrian Peterson carries Minnesota Vikings past division rival Detroit Lions

MINNEAPOLIS -- Adrian Peterson gave Minnesota another injury-defying performance, trampling theDetroit Lions down the stretch.

Peterson raced 61 yards for the game-sealing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, padding his NFL rushing lead with 171 yards on 27 carries for the Vikings in a 34-24 victory over the Lions on Sunday afternoon.

"I still can get stronger. I'm still not there, man. I'm pressing to get there," Peterson said, when asked for seemingly the hundredth time whether he's 100 percent healthy. "I'm going to come back stronger and better after the bye."

Peterson had 120 yards in the final 15 minutes, 10-1/2 months after reconstructive surgery on his left knee. This was his third straight game with a 60-yard gain or longer. Ponder bounced back from three ugly weeks with 221 yards and two touchdowns on 24-for-32 passing for theVikings (6-4), patiently looking for receivers and avoiding the dreaded turnover.

"You could tell he was more confident, got into a rhythm," Peterson said. "He was just playing ball. Playing loose. That's what we need from him."

Rookie Jarius Wright filled in for injured standout Percy Harvin and scored in his first NFL game. Tight end Kyle Rudolph had a touchdown catch in the fourth quarter, too. Ponder passed for almost as many yards in the first quarter of this game (57) as he did last week at Seattle (6-3).

"Just going out and playing without worrying about the consequences of your throws," Ponder said. "Go out and let it rip, that's what I did."

But with the Vikings, it always comes back to Peterson. He has 353 yards in the last two games and 1,128 yards already this season.

"He hasn't lost a step at all from that knee surgery. He might even be better," left tackle Matt Kalilsaid.

Calvin Johnson had 207 yards on 12 catches, including a touchdown that brought the Lions (4-5) a little closer with 1:53 left. But Johnson's lost fumble near midfield on the previous possession putVikings rookie Blair Walsh in position for his fourth field goal.

"I feel like we didn't play our best. Just speaking for myself: There's a lot more we could put on the field," Johnson said.

Matthew Stafford threw touchdown passes to Brandon Pettigrew and Titus Young to cap quick 80-plus-yard drives in the second half, fueled by Johnson and his ailing left knee that sure didn't look too bad. Their sluggish start, though, was too much to overcome.

"We were backed up and going 80-plus, it felt like, the whole game," Stafford said. "That's something that's going to be tough against a defense like that."

Winning this game was critical for both teams and their quest to make the playoffs, which for theLions would be their first consecutive appearances since three in a row from 1993-95 and for theVikings would be their first since Brett Favre's renaissance in 2009.

The rest of the schedule is brutal on each side. Detroit's remaining opponents took a combined 44-16 record into Sunday, and Detroit plays Green Bay and Houston next. The Lions can play five of their last seven contests at home, however.

The Vikings face four of their final six on the road, with their only home games against Chicago and Green Bay. Their remaining foes had a 36-14 mark, entering the weekend. To have a fighting chance in this challenging stretch, the Vikings badly needed a boost for Ponder and their sputtering passing scheme.

"If you want to be a good football team, these are the games that you really have to win," coach Leslie Fraziersaid.

With Harvin unable to play because of a sprained left ankle, Wright made his first career catch count, flying past strong safety Erik Coleman on a post route for 54 yards. After being brought down at the goal line and scooped up in a bear hug by fellow wide receiver Jerome Simpson, the fourth-round draft pick from Arkansas caught a 3-yard pass in the corner three plays later for the 7-0 lead.

The defense didn't force a turnover in either of the previous two games and allowed four straight 100-yard rushers, so progress was made there, too. Chad Greenway's interception set up Walsh's first field goal.Mikel Leshoure's Lions-leading total was 43 yards rushing.

"We knew it was out there. We just had to go figure out how to do it again," Greenway said.

NOTES: The Lions haven't won two games in a row at Minnesota since 1990-91. ... The Stafford-Johnson connection was their first this season for a touchdown. He hurt his ankle and said a Vikings lineman intentionally landed with both knees on his lower leg. The Lions also lost DE Cliff Avril in the third quarter to a concussion.

Houston Texans, Chicago Bears differ in one key area

Chicago's fatal flaw

We came into this season wondering if Chicago's protection could hold up. The perception is that the Bears have improved on the offensive line because the team is 7-1, but that's not really the case. Only the Arizona Cardinals have given up more sacks/per game.

Even against lackluster fronts like the Tennessee Titans in Week 9, Bears quarteback Jay Cutler does not have time to set up in the pocket often. Bears fans will point out that the team is built on defense, special teams, defense, running and defense before the passing game.

Good luck with that approach in the playoffs. Just look at the other NFC contenders: San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks all have elite pass rushes. The Green Bay Packers destroyed the Bears' line in their first meeting. Chicago faces a team with a winning record for the next six games. Life is about to get a lot harder.

Pressure from all sides

Bears left tackle J'Marcus Webb and right tackle Gabe Carimi get all the attention for their struggles, but Cutler has perhaps had even more trouble with pressure up the middle. This is a problem with MVP candidate defensive end J.J. Watt coming to town. Houston presents mismatch problems at every level of the defense.

The Bears line does not communicate well, even when Cutler is nice to them. Houston can get pressure with stunts, blitzes, and simply by winning one-on-one matchups.

A new Texan to worry about

Houston's first-round pick linebackerWhitney Mercilus comes on stronger every week. Linebackers Brooks Reedand Connor Barwin haven't been great this year rushing the passer, but they present problems along with Watt. The Bills only gave up eight sacks all season before facing Houston. TheTexans got Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on the ground four times.

Battle of the bests

I was surprised to see I was the onlyATL writer picking Houston. When theTexans are on the field, you have a severe mismatch up front. When the Texans offense is on the field, you have a matchup of one of the best offensive lines in football against one of the best defensive lines in Chicago. It's going to be fun to watch.

Matt Schaub is as well protected as any quarterback in football. (He's only been sacked 10 times.) He's also not very mobile. Get Schaub off the spot and you will disrupt the Texans passing game quickly.

This remains a play-action passing attack that likes to rip off big chunks of yardage. That worked well against Buffalo, but the Texans aren't as fast on the outside as they used to be. Texas receiverAndre Johnson is still very effective, but it's a little harder getting him open deep. Tight end Owen Daniels and wide receiver Kevin Walter aren't known for their speed. Daniels isn't 100 percent healthy and may not play. A third wide receiver has not stepped up.

The Bears are unbelievable at preventing the big play. It's going to be tough for the Texans to get deep or separation. FootballOutsiders ranks these two defenses as the top two against the pass. This game figures to be won on the ground.

Two elite backs

Arian Foster is running very strong again after a relatively slow start for him. Matt Forte is playing as well as he has at any point in his Bearscareer, but he's not getting the ball as much as he used to.

Look for Chicago to load up Forte with carries this week. The Bears offensive line is much better run blocking than in pass protection. Forte has only received more than 16 carries in a game twice despite all of Chicago's winning. Foster has almost doubled that workload.

Defining game

Both teams fell short in their biggest moments to date this season. (Both national televised losses against the Packers.) The Texans are most vulnerable through the air, but the Bears don't have the roster to expose them. Cornerback Johnathan Joseph is playing better of late and Houston should be able to slow down Brandon Marshall. Wade Phillips is right: The Bears don't throw it to anyone else.

This is a defining game for both teams. They both think they have the best defense in football and a chance for homefield advantage in the playoffs.

The biggest difference: Houston's offense is so much further along. They will be ready Sunday night.

                    Brandon Marshall draws Houston Texans' attention

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been grinding through film of the Chicago Bears' offense this week, and he has come to a conclusion.

"They've only thrown it to one guy basically," Phillips said, via Tania Ganguli of the Houston Chronicle. "They do a great job of that."

That one guy, of course, is Brandon Marshall. The statistics outrageously back up Phillips' claim. Marshall has 797 receiving yards on the season; no one else on the Bearshas more than 200 yards. Alshon Jeffery's injury hasn't helped, but ultimately this isn't a good thing for the Bears. Quality defenses won't just allow Marshall to run wild.

"We're going to double-cover him every play," Phillips said, apparently using his Texas deadpan humor. He later mentioned Johnathan Joseph would get some one-on-one against Marshall so the Texans wouldn't double Marshall every snap, according to Ganguli. 

After watching Bears-Titans on Game Rewind this week, we continue to have concerns about Chicago's offense. It's still mostly relying on short passes because the offensive linemen are suspect. (Maybe Cutler is just too nice to them.)

The lack of protection is a problem because Cutler is a quarterback who usually needs to see his receivers open before pulling the trigger. He might not have that luxury against the Texans. Houston is playing outstanding defense and has found another dangerous pass rusher in rookieWhitney Mercilus.

Matt Forte remains the fulcrum for this Bears offense. He'll need to carry the team Sunday because we expect Phillips' gang to effectively limit Marshall's production.

Here goes:

Q: We saw that you were at the Aerosmith concert the other day.

TB: I was at the opening. I didn't stay for the concert.

Q: Sometimes you dress kind of weird.

TB: Thank you.

Q: What's going on there? Who does that? Do you lay that out?

TB: I have no response to that (laughs).

I didn't need to do any research to know who was asking the question. Tom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England is a former colleague of mine and a good friend. He loves busting chops -- no matter who it is. No one else in the Patriots' media corps has the stones or the sense of humor to somehow pull this off.

The transcript doesn't quite do the video justice. We love that Curran didn't let the issue die, which in turn made Brady turn red with embarrassment. Brady personally thanked Curran on his way out of the session.

"Trying to keep it light," Curran replied. "You're very buttoned-down today. I'm trying to keep it light."

Curran also presented an inarguable fact: Brady indeed does dress kind of weird. We'll continue the hard-hitting analysis all week leading up to Bills-Patriots.

Let's start at the top. Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams is watching. Closely.

His team is floundering under a second-year coaching staff coming up short on both sides of the ball. Forget the postseason down on old Rocky Top. At 3-6, coaches and players in Tennessee aren't sure where they'll be a year from today.

What went wrong

It's interesting that the uneven play of running back Chris Johnson receives more attention than the failures of this Titans defense. No ground game can thrive when your defense allows a league-worst 34.2 points per game. The Titans are on track to become just the fourth team in NFL history to surrender 500 points in a single season.

With the floodgates open, the Titans offense is held hostage, forced to abandon the game plan before a player like Johnson has a chance to settle in.

The problems on defense are immense. The Titans rank 30th against the run and 27th against the pass. They've allowed 30 or more points in seven of nine games. And here's the killer number: The Titans rank 31st in stopping opponents on third down. Opposing quarterbacks are extending drives and seeing zero heat from Tennessee's soft pass rush.

With fantasy football ruling the day, the focus on Johnson's troubles are unavoidable, but he's improved on last year with a string of high-octane performances. Johnson fails too often to hit the hole with purpose, but when he does, he still has the elusiveness and speed to inflict major damage.
